The Meadows Home & Garden Club has been presenting scholarships for residents of the City of Meadows Place since 1995. For 2023, we were able to provide three scholarships thanks in part to our membership fees and to the support from the community for our fund-raising activities. Part of the application includes an essay. This year we asked applicants to explain how the City’s motto “Your Place for Life” was true for them. “How has living in Meadows Place contributed to your well-being, happiness, and personal development.” Excerpts from their wining essays are included with their pictures.
2023 Scholarship Recipients
Johanna Hernandez
Johanna Hernandez is currently attending the University of Texas/San Antonio where she is majoring in Biology. She intends to pursue a career in healthcare as a pediatric doctor or a family care physician, as she loves to work with kids, even so much so that she has worked as a camp counselor for the Meadows Place summer camp for many years. She loves to volunteer on the weekends, as well as bake whenever she is given a chance. On campus she is involved with organizations such as VOICES, oriented towards volunteer service within San Antonio, Project Sunshine, a pediatric patient volunteer service, as well as the Pre-Med Society. She intends to graduate in May of 2026. Go Roadrunners!
In her essay, Joanna writes: “Throughout my life, Meadows Place has served as a community of love and warmth. When comparing my upbringing to those in neighboring cities or anywhere else, I am reminded of how lucky I was to be raised in such a town, where the neighbors are always ready to lend a helping hand.”
Chloe Arceneaux
Chloe Arceneaux will be attending Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She plans on majoring in Political Science, minoring in Sociology and hopefully Mastering in Journalism all in hopes of becoming an investigative journalist.
In her essay, Chloe writes: “Every time I order a package, I always put ‘Meadows Place’ in the city line. My Dad tells me to leave it ‘Stafford’ because it’s easier, but doing that makes me feel I’m betraying something…not identifying with a city that has made such a massive impact in my life.”
Fher Juarez
Fher Juarez will be attending Texas A&M University College Station. He plans on getting a bachelors in engineering and hopefully a masters as well once he decides on a specific Engineering major. His main goal in college is to start a new chapter within his life in order to open new doors that will help guide him through life, while also helping others achieve their goals.
In his essay, Fher writes: “My family and I moved here 5 years ago and we were instantly welcomed by our neighbors and the atmosphere was completely different from everywhere I used to live. Overall I never thought how much of an impact this city would have on my body and soul.”
