President's Message

With deep gratitude and enthusiasm, I enter my first term as president of the Meadows Home and Garden Club. The Meadows humbly started developing in 1969, and the Meadows Home and Garden Club was born one year later by an optimistic group of people who had a vision of growth and giving to the community.  The Home and Garden Club through wonderful efforts of its members has proudly offered services to Meadows Place, and by awarding deserving students of Meadows Place scholarships to further their education.

Since its inception in 1970, the Meadows Home and Garden Club has grown with our city.  In the early years of the club, there were few methods neighbors and friends had to remain in touch.  Regular meetings in members’ homes was the way to meet, visit and retain a sense of community. People met (in person), shared stories and enjoyed each other’s company.

Approaching 50 years of the club’s existence, we have all experienced huge strides in technology, many of which have helped us significantly.  Having said that, the invention of Facebook and other social media outlets, as well as the invention of e-mail have given us all the ability to “stay in touch” with each other in a way never imagined in 1970.  As much as this technology has helped us stay close, it has also separated us on a personal level.

It is my vision for the Home and Garden Club to provide opportunities for members and citizens of Meadows Place to get out and meet in person, share stories of family and good times. Having new members join, get involved and assist in the events the Home and Garden Club sponsors will benefit our community.

We have much to look forward to.  Beginning with the 4th of July Parade and the popular Fall Market in October.  The Home and Garden Club will also sponsor events for members and friends to gather and meet in a casual setting.

We welcome you to come, join “your” club and help make the Meadows Home and Garden Club a vibrant, proud part of our great city!

Sincerely,
Joe DeBruyn,  President

Club Overview

Everyone with an interest in gardening and/or home maintenance and improvement is invited to visit or join our club.

Our meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May, beginning at 7:00 PM at the Meadows Place Discovery & Nature Center.  Our meetings begin with a program open to everyone in the Community. Typical program topics include native plants, container gardening, yard art, landscaping, lawn care, composting, organic gardening, water conservation, and home improvement and maintenance. Following the presentation, refreshments are provided after which guests are free to leave or stay for the business meeting that follows.

Other activities for members include a Christmas Dinner, an "International Dinner" in February,  a monthly " lunch bunch"
at restaurants in the area, organized trips to various places of horticultural interest, and visits to private gardens.

Brief History of the Club

Meadows Place began as the Meadows Municipal Utility District, established in 1967. In 1968, the first houses were constructed.  In January of 1970, the first business meeting of "The Meadows Garden Club" took place. In attendance were Deanie Winstel, Janell East, Barbara Groves, Sylvia Miller, Carolyn Clear, Jan Van Buskirk, Virginia Manfrey, and Arlene Davitt.  It was at this meeting that the group decided to meet on the second Tuesday of each month, the same day the meetings continue to this day.  In 1982 the Club was incorporated under the name "Meadows Home and Garden Club."

The City
incorporated on November 14, 1983 as "The Meadows" to avoid being annexed by Houston. The City changed its name to "Meadows Place" in 2000 as requested by the US Postal Service because of its inability to distinguish us from Meadows, Texas, despite the varying zip codes. The Club, however, continues to go by its name of incorporation.
